The Flow of Gas Through Pole-Star Gasfuse
The diagram shows in simplified form the path of gas through Pole-Star Gasfuse. Here's the sequence of normal gas flow.
1) Gas enters the Pole-Star Gasfuse directly from the cylinder
2) Gas is channeled into a chamber, where it passes the shutoff element.
3) Gas is then channeled up out of the chamber and past the gauge pin.
4) Gas then exits
The various uses of Pole-Star Gasfuse all follow from this sequence. Importantly, the gauge pin is directly attached to the gauge, and acts as a pressure detector, which causes the gauge to show changes in gas pressure via movement in the needle
How Pole-Star Gasfuse? Stops Major Leak
The shutoff mechanism works on the Bernouilli effect. A sudden increase in gas flow (for example from the hose rupturing) changes the pressure around the shut off element, lifting it up and causing it to plug the exit to the chamber and stop the flow of gas completely.
The shutoff element will stay in this position until you push down on the gauge. The gauge pin then pushes the shutoff element back down into the chamber, so resetting the Pole-Star Gasfuse ready for normal operation.
The circumstances for a leak can be
- Cracking of the hose due to regular wear and tear
- Disconnection of the hose by accident
- Weakening of the hose due to spillage of food / oil and consequential deterioration
- Regulator failure delivers unreduced cylinder pressure
- Hose is burnt off due to the ignition of small leaks
- If the cylinder is accidentally knocked over on its side
- Damages to gas tube caused by rodents
Circumstances where Pole-Star Gasfuse will NOT work
- If the leak is negligible
- If the flame at the burner of the stove extinguishes
- If leak is not large enough to create the required pressure differential
- If cylinder or stove is faulty
Gas Safety Standard
As per Australian Gas Safety Standard. Applied for necessary approvals in India.
By law, all Gas products sold in Australia must comply with Australian Standard AS4557-2004. A change was introduced recently which requires all new Gas products to have a device fitted which either shuts off or limits the flow of gas.
Rules 2.4.1.2
2.4.1.2 Means to automatically shut off or reduce gas flow.
Means shall be provided to automatically shut off or reduce the flow of gas using a device, upstream of the hose that will operate at a flow of not more than 3.0 cu.m/hr (air equivalent at standard conditions, see Clause 1.2.66) with 700 kPa supplied to the inlet of the device.
In the case of a device that reduces the flow of gas, the bypass shall not allow a flow greater than 0.3 m3/h (air equivalent at standard conditions, see Clause 1.2.66) with 700 kPa supplied to the inlet of the device.
The means shall-
(A) be integral with the regulator assembly;
(B) be designed in a way to prevent consumer disassembly without the use of specialized tools or undue force; and
(c) include either manual or automatic reset without the need to disconnect any part of the gas piping system, including the cylinder connection.
